The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is a country made up of seven 'emirates' Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al-Quwain, Ras Al-Khaimah, Fujairah. It has an area of 83,600 square kilometers, and 1318 kilometers of coastline on both the Arabian Gulf and the Arabian Sea. The Hajjar Mountains form a backbone down the east of the country with the rest of the landscape comprising sandy beaches, salt flats, gravel plains and vast areas of desert dunes.
UAE once had the fifth-largest oil reserves in the world. In order to avoid an economic reliance on the petrol industry, the efforts towards diversification of the economy has been continued at high speed. The result is an economy, which is independent of the oil price, with a stable growth. The population of the UAE has grown dramatically over the last few decades and stands at over four million, many of whom are expatriate residents who live and work in the country.
